Brazilian Channelers of 'The God Force'
Guy Lyon Playfair (1935-2018) in The Flying Cow: Research into Paranormal Phenomena In the World's Most Psychic County (1975/revised edition 2011) described Brazil as "surely the world's Most Psychic Nation" as well as one of the largest. ("Fifth in both area and population.") One rationale is "the stranger side-effects of Brazilian Spiritism." Playfair had lived and worked for many years in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, beginning in 1961. He was successively employed as English teacher, journalist and then press agent for USAID. He mentioned there were at least three major spiritual traditions "in which belief in spirits and their active participation in our earth lives is implicit." The largest was identified to be "Kardecism, or Christian Spiritism according to its codifier, the Frenchman who wrote under the pseudonym Allan Kardec (1804-1869) . . . a Spiritist accepts communication with the spirits of the departed on a regular basis." The other traditions mentioned by Playfair are Umbanda and Candomblé. He wrote:
There were so many Spiritist doctors in São Paulo that they had their own association, whose members offered their patients spiritual guidance and healing along with conventional treatment, only charging a fee for the latter.
Other Spiritists I knew in São Paulo includes psychologists, psychiatrists, teachers, government officials, in fact members of just about any walk of life. I was interested to discover that many of them became Spiritists because of personal experience of what they considered evidence for the existence of a non-physical world, agreeing with Kardec that 'phenomena which are inexplicable by any known laws are occurring all over the world, and revealing the action of a free and intelligent will as their cause.'
A chapter in The Flying Cow provides the author's account of two operations performed on him by the psychic surgeon 'Edivaldo' (Edivaldo Oliveira Silva 1930-1974) to treat a recurring digestive ailment. Playfair also observed other operations and wrote about conversing with Edivaldo.
"Bonsoir, mes amis!" It was the voice of Dr. Pierre, the French member of the team of spirits who work through the mediumship of Edivaldo. Speaking correct but very elementary French, he wished everybody well and gave way to an Italian voice, which was followed in turn by another voice saying "good evening" in English with an atrocious Bahian accent. Finally, after a few Germanic noises from the legendary Dr. Fritz, we were greeted in the fluent Spanish of Dr. Calazans. Later I was told that he in fact did all the talking for the others, hence the variety of accents.
Upon interviewing Edivaldo while he wasn't in a trance, Playfair was amazed to hear that he had no memory of having operated on him. A native of Vitoria da Conquista in Bahia, Brazil, Edivaldo was 42 years old in July 1972. Playfair wrote: "By profession he was a secondary school teacher, entomologist and taxidermist, and despite his age he was also studying both medicine and law . . . In ten years of healing he had attended to an estimated 65,000 'clients,' as he called them." Edivaldo considered himself a Christian. His first trance was described as sudden and unexpected.
"I don't invoke anything," he exclaimed. "The spirits just come. I sit down and withdraw my own spirit, and Dr. Calazans takes over. There isn't room for two spirits in one body, you see!"
When this happens, all Edivaldo feels is a strong light in his eyes, which he told me was like that of a welder's blowlamp, and then he is out.
Operations, he told me, can be either what he called plasmic or ectoplasmic. In the former, separation takes place of the red globules from the plasma, only the latter remaining visible. Ectoplasmic operations were totally invisible to our eyes.
"My religion consists of a humble admiration of the illimitable superior spirit who reveals himself in the slight details we are able to perceive with our frail and feeble minds."
The Flying Cow also presents chapters about such Brazilian 'mediums'/'channels'/'paranormal people' as Peixotinho, Mirabelli, Antonio Sales, Lourival de Freitas, Zeca, and the 'psychic surgeon' known as Maria.
After finishing medical school in 1975 and serving for two years in the army as a doctor, de Quieroz was in private practice as a medical doctor and surgeon for eight years before beginning the experimental and mediumistic work with the spirit of 'Dr. Adolph Fritz' among the spiritual team of "nearly one thousand medical doctors who once lived on earth and who specialize in different branches of medical science." The diagnosing of patients, prescribing medication and operations described in Healing States were reminiscent of those chronicled about Arigo.
Prior to his research of Arigo (article), Dr. Andrija Puharich (1918-1995) wrote about his investigation of unexplained states of consciousness in The Sacred Mushroom: Key to the Door of Eternity (1959) and Beyond Telepathy (1962), the latter including his investigation of the trance medium who would become a future subject for Fuller, Eileen Garrett. The earlier book is a chronicle that encompasses Puharich witnessing sculptor Harry Stone go into a trance to facilitate communication with ancient Egyptian Ra Ho Tep that included the writing of hieroglyphic characters.
Presenting 'free translations' of the hieroglyphic messages resulting from the trances in The Sacred Mushroom, Puharich offered reflections relating to his life experiences and research.
There is a clear and consistent description here of a plant, either as gold or red in color, and its sacred nature. In passage 9 in the phrase, great gods, there is a hint that the gods may be the Ennead, or the great nine ruling gods of Egypt. This hint is more clearly spelled out in a hieroglyphic passage of October 5, 1954. In translation: "A bond is broken [released?]. The secret is broken [released?]. Here the Ennead speak of the alabaster vessel of life." At the time this statement was recorded it was quite impossible to translate it and get any clear meaning from it. This could only be done after the entire story was complete. I interpret this statement to mean that the time had come to reveal or divulge a long-standing secret, presumably in connections with the sacred mushroom. Nowadays, we would say that a secret has been declassified.
The reference to the Ennead is in itself interesting. Heliopolis was the center of a religious system which had for its pantheon nine great gods, and these have been called the Ennead, which means the Nine. The Nine of Heliopolis are Atum, Shu and Tefnut, Geb and Nut, Osiris and Isis, and Seth and Nephthys.
Puharich expressed a willingness to accept tentatively the existence of a discarnate personality who may have once lived in ancient Egypt yet this understanding brought more questions than reasoned speculations concerning the nature of the intelligence being manifested through Harry Stone.
I would prefer to consider both carnate and disincarnate intelligence as being but poor reflections, to borrow Plato’s analogy, of a more universal field of intelligence. And of this, we must admit, we know very little. For that matter we know very little of the basic processes and ideas of human minds. The human mind daily goes about accumulating knowledge and classifying it in millions of small ways, and yet we know nothing about the agent of this work. How we grasp and utilize any idea we do not know. Yet we go on using ideas with the greatest sense of importance all of our lives. The basis of creativity in ideas, imagination, reason, and memory is all unknown. It appears to me that if we could solve the process of one function of the human mind, such as memory alone, we could then begin to understand the rest of the idea process and in time the very nature of intelligence itself.
Scientist/inventor/paranormal researcher and author of Uri: A Journal of the Mystery of Uri Geller (1974), Dr. Andrija Puharich (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7) also studied the miraculous trance healer Pachita of Mexico. (article) What may be learned about her may seem nearly beyond belief to readers who are unfamiliar with nonfiction case chronologies of people who've become channelers to facilitate spiritual healing. These people include Ray Brown of England (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6).
He explained that he had grown up in a family of mediums and had been incorporating spirits since the age of 12. Before his twentieth birthday Gasparetto had painted over 2,400 canvasses by over four dozen different artists, each an original signed by the artist — Leonardo Da Vinci, Monet, Degas, and others. All the paintings were done in a dimly lit room where one color could not be distinguished from another, and at extraordinary speed, each work being completed in less than ten minutes. Each painting had the unmistakable print of the artist, who sometimes spoke through Gasparetto, offering healing counsel and advice to individuals attending the spirit-painting sessions.
Among other authors who've written about observing Gasparetto are Guy Lyon Playfair in The Indefinite Boundary (1976), Roxi Iain McNay in Close Encounters: A Journey of Spiritual Discovery and Adventure (1991) and Shirley MacLaine in Going Within (1989). Healing States co-author Alberto Villoldo visited Gasparetto's clinic in April 1983 and observed his trance process. A portrait of a young woman was signed "Claude Monet" after being executed in less than five minutes. Three and one-half minutes later another portrait was finished and signed "Modigliani, 1983."
Like the Monet, the Modigliani signature was identical to the painter's own. So were the color combinations used, and even the models resembled those the artists employed while still alive. "The spirits come to me," Gasparetto explained, "and show their styles, sign their own signatures, and do incredible works. I see Toulouse-Lautrec. I speak with Van Gogh, and these artists want to show that they are still alive, that they preserve their personalities, and that life is eternal. This realization alone can heal the deepest wounds of our spirit."
The book includes several photos of Gasparetto's work. His foot is seen applying paint to the canvas signed "Monet." Also shown are paintings signed "Toulouse Lautrec" and "Modigliani." Another caption explains: "Gasparetto takes bold strokes without looking as he completes a drawing signed 'Picasso.'" The authors related that following their experience with Gasperetto they considered, "Is it possible that many of our intuitions and creative thoughts come from outside ourselves?" A Brazilian documentary about Gasparetto was made in 1989 entitled "Sexto Sentido — A Obra Mediúnica de Gasparetto."
In May 2010 I learned about another Brazilian medium/channeler producing paintings in the recognizable styles of the great historical painters. I found information about Floréncio Reverendo Anton Neto at www.florencio.dk. A short biography related that Floréncio was born in Salvador, in Bahia state in Brazil on November 18, 1973. He grew up in the town Tobias Berreto in the state of Sergipe, where he attended a Catholic elementary school. He was identified to be a trained educator and regression therapist who was currently engaged in further education at nursing schools in Bahia. He was currently working as an independent consultant in Special Education and as a regression therapist.
When he was eight years old, Floréncio "heard and saw spirits." At age 11, he joined a study group at a spiritualist center and read The Gospel According to Spiritism by Allan Kardec. He later was selected for mediumistic development in voice mediumship and automatic writing by Groupo da Fraternidade (Brotherhood Group) Leopoldo Machado. "On December 21, 1990, when he was 17 years old, his spiritual mentors asked him to concentrate for a while as part of an experiment and the spirits painted in total darkness." Since that time, Floréncio has frequently and expediently produced a variety of remarkable, lavish artwork. "The spirits let him know that the purpose of this work was to prove the immortality of the soul and provide resources for social work among the many poor in Brazil."
Floréncio has demonstrated his mediumistic painting to audiences in numerous European cities. As of 2008, he has painted more than 22,000 works of art by 74 different artists. That year in Denmark, Danish artist Carl Locher (1851-1915) painted through him for the first time. At www.florencio.dk, a statement identified "Some of the painters that get channeled through Floréncio": Mary Cassatt, Leonardo da Vinci, Gauguin, Giotto, Manet, Matisse, Miro, Modigliani, Claude Monet, Picasso, Rembrandt, Renoir, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Vincent van Gogh. The Flying Cow includes a profile of Francisco Cândido Xavier (1910-2002) — better known as 'Chico Xavier' in South America where his books are widely known as the work of a Spiritist medium whose specialty is automatic writing. More than 400 books by Xavier were published during his lifetime. Playfair met him when he was signing books for the public with each person who greeted the author receiving an autograph, a handshake and a souvenir rose. Playfair noted that money made from the sales of Xavier’s books for 40 years was spent for food, clothing and medical assistance for the poor. Playfair provided details about the circumstances of several of Xavier’s books, including his 60th book Evolution in Two Worlds via automatic writing with another medium, Dr. Waldo Vieira, in 40 days—20 for each medium—in 1958.
Playfair is also the author of Chico Xavier: Medium of the Century (2010) and reported in the book:
Asked how he managed to write it in the first place, Chico explained that although in his normal state he was unable to understand a word of Evolution, during the actual writing he had been raised to the level of his superconscious mind, and had taken down, as dictated to him, the notes for a lecture course being given in the next world. This is certainly what the book reads like, and I can find no other feasible explanation for its origin.
I found one of Chico Xavier's works in an English language edition on the Internet. The free ebook was translated from the 25th Portuguese edition of the 1944 Nosso Lar ('Our Home') and this edition is entitled The Astral City — The story of a doctor’s odyssey in the Spirit World by André Luiz (spirit) through Francisco Cândido Xavier. The first electronic edition of this book is presented by Spiritist Group of New York and GEAE (Advanced Study Group of Spiritism). S. J. Haddad’s 1986 introduction to the first English edition includes the following.
It has been repeatedly confirmed by reliable messages that the etherical replicas of the physical world are a common event in the next plane of existence. Indeed, the similarities of the two worlds are at times so confusing to the newly departed that the spirit mistakes them for material life, often ignoring the fact that death has occurred and that he has lost his physical body. Bearing in mind these and other basic principles of transition expounded by The Astral City we begin to conceive of a hereafter that is within the realm of Nature, a realm equally ruled by just laws of cause and effect. The environment André Luiz describes in this book apparently belongs to the category of an etheric advanced type of Earth life where spirits dwell while in preparation for higher, more imponderable worlds or for the return to another experience in the flesh.
Chico Xavier
The books brought forth through Xavier are among the diverse evidence documenting the perpetuity of life beyond the Earth plane. 'Automatic writing' is among the forms of channeling/psychic phenomena indicating that each human being's thoughts may encompass sources beyond what one might consider as his or her individual conscious mind.
Xavier's sixtieth book Evolution In Two Worlds (1959) was the first of seventeen books that he wrote in collaboration with another medium, Dr. Waldo Vieira. "Only upon completion of his half did Chico get instructions from his guide Emmanuel to contact Dr. Vieira and put the book together."
Perhaps another way of expressing that Earth beings have a 'shared subconscious mind' is to state that all individual consciousness/personality units belong to a self-aware 'All That Is' — a highly moral force. Each of us is currently having a local experience on our planet yet this Intermediary Superconsciousness is unrestricted by space and time as we are accustomed to being in our daily lives, as evidenced by some occurrences chronicled among the annals of 'unexplained phenomena.' Upon considering writings attributed to André Luiz through Xavier, [Guy Lyon] Playfair used the expressions 'Superior Intelligence,' 'divine source' and 'Intelligent Principle.' From my own observations of otherwise 'anomalous' circumstances, such a principle/Principal is not 'inconceivably remote' in relation to understanding human nature; there can be no more intimate or essential part of one's self.
Arigo
The Author's Note concludes with John [Fuller] commenting about the case of Arigo posing "a mystery and a challenge for science." One cautionary societal imbroglio offered by this case study book is that closed-minded conformity to rigid social institutions has motivated individuals to persecute in tandem anyone challenging customary practices. Many of the individuals who showed themselves to feel threatened by Arigo's success were accustomed to subordination in relation to protocols of the regional healthcare system or a religious hierarchy.
[In addition to 'Dr. Fritz'] Fuller mentioned reports about other 'spirits' involved with 'Arigo's prowess as a miracle healer' including thirteenth-century monk Fre Fabiano de Christo. Today more data is commonly available about 'channelers' as many documentary books and recordings about these case chronologies have been published during recent decades. A 'channeled entity' may manifest through channelers who themselves might not be in a state of conscious awareness during the intervals. One of these entities has been quoted: "The channeling process, which has been going on for thousands of years without much publicity, is now again being used, and it provides an opportunity for people to augment their growth because you, as a civilization, are ready to grow. You are seeking answers that traditional spiritual venues are simply not providing — that traditional Eastern or traditional Western methods are not providing — and therefore you are seeking new, different and innovative answers to the questions that you have been asking for so very long." (article)
Fuller chronicled in the book how in 1957 Arigo was brought to trial for practicing illegal medicine. As summarized by Fuller, an addendum filed by Arigo's attorney in his defense stated, "The ability of a healer, even if illegal, has to be taken into account . . . Arigo was obviously more than able, he was super-able. Arigo accomplishes what he does without even knowing he is doing it . . . Arigo helps only those that the medical world cannot help . . . He acts through an invisible element that is possessing him . . . In Arigo's case, this is benight possession . . . Arigo believes that the spirit of Dr. Fritz is the spirit of Christ . . ."
John of God
João works as a channel in association with what are usually called 'Control' or 'Spirit Guides' to facilitate healings when improvement for a patient is possible. João himself has always attributed to 'God' the healing that occur and has never claimed that everyone who comes to the Casa has the potential to be healed.
One of the difficulties with the accusations against João concerns the phenomena of trance 'channeling' — historical records such as those about the Oracle at Delphi show this to be a natural aspect of human life on Earth since the dawn of earthly civilizations. Some of the women now suspicious that they could have been abused may not understand João's mentality and circumstances as a trance channeler. João himself is not conscious while 'in entity' and therefore will have no memory of channeling intervals.
Considering the predicament of readers learning about the abuse accusations, the articles generally have completely overlooked 76-year-old João's record of conscientiously helping so many people during recent decades. It is also evident that young people in particular may not comprehend how a man of his age does not have the libido sometimes associated with perpetrators of sexual abuse.
For decades João Teixeira da Faria known as 'John of God' has been successfully treating patients at his internationally known healing center in the presence of patients and staff members, including numerous volunteers.
Rubens de Faria, Jr.
Masao Maki’s In Search of Brazil’s Quantum Surgeon: The Dr. Fritz Phenomenon (1998) is a nonfiction account making clear that encountering Rubens Faria was only the most blatant manifestation of an intermediary Superconsciousness in Maki’s life.
Maki described witnessing how Faria’s own personality would regularly be substituted by a consciousness identified in part as that of Dr. Adolph Fritz, the World War I German army surgeon who’d formerly been associated with Arigo and other Brazilian trance healers. Faria would be unconscious as his body enabled 'Dr. Fritz' to regularly treat hundreds or even more than a thousand patients in a single day. A graduate of the Institute of Military Engineering, Faria had previously worked as a computer engineer.
Early in his account, Maki observed, "All this synchronicity meant something, I felt. I couldn’t simply dismiss these coincidences as flukes." In Faria's warehouse clinic in Rio de Janeiro, Maki found himself observing the process where Faria 'channeled' Dr. Fritz. While Faria needed eyeglasses as he was myopic with an astigmatism, the incorporated Dr. Fritz’s spirit "can see everything without glasses, inside and out."
Maki's book includes interviews with many people who’d been successfully treated for maladies deemed inoperable by their customary doctors, including some who expressed their gratitude by working as clinic volunteers. At the time of Maki's visit in May 1996, it was estimated that 350,000 patients had received medical treatment. Maki noticed that a large number of patients each day were treated with a dark brown liquid inside hypodermic needles. Maki eventually decided to have his painful left shoulder be treated with an injection from Dr. Fritz and the treatment proved successful. He discovered that this liquid was made up of alcohol, iodine and turpentine. Standard anesthesia practices were not necessary during the healing being accomplished.
Note from MRB:
This year I've been campaigning for a return to international diplomacy and for citizens to express themselves to stop national leaders from opting to carry out deluded military agendas that they estimate will enhance their personal prestige. Right now throughout the world there are horrible conditions resulting from the breakdown of international diplomacy. For many decades it has been culturally traditional for countless people to rely on military-industrial complex-controlled mainstream news and also give their attention to entertainment, instead of developing their metaphysical, spiritual and cosmological understanding of life. Considering the many billions of dollars used for military aid to Ukraine, the money would have been better used in support of America's homeless and disenfranchised along with finding ways to help improve the lives of people internationally, in particular Russia to evade nuclear war that will destroy the environment of our planet. Proxy war is also war against man and God. When contemporary world leaders plainly state ultimatums to one another, only someone with a mentality indoctrinated to be passive to the mindset of 'military programming' would fail to advocate diplomatic ways of resolving problems. Recent blog articles have focused on the circumstances related to the reasons that 'those who live as sheeple will perish as sheeple' unless collectively we may through working together express enough love and respect to our fellow humans to take society beyond illusionary devotion to nationalism-oriented paperwork principalities. Providing intellectual and spiritual insights for us are what may be learned from being attentive to documented Divine Dispensations that have been subjects for reporting at this blog for many years. (Metaphysical Articles Index) Warnings for mankind have included apparitions of the blessed virgin Mary and contemporary correlations with the life of Bel-Marduk, the ancient god-king-priest who wasn't able to prevent a holocaust in the ancient world.
